Balanced Diet

What is the balanced diet?

October’s wellness theme is balance, which is particularly perfect for my Libras out there!
When it comes to nutrition, what is a so called “balanced diet”?  In short, it’s a diet that contains the right amount of the nutrients we need to remain healthy.  That means we are getting enough nutrients from our food!  This balanced diet supports all the systems in the body, such as our immunity, brain health and cardiovascular system to name a few.

5 Components of a balanced diet

1. Carbohydrates – provide you with energy. Look for complex sources such as whole grains, legumes & vegetables!

2. Protein – helps you build & maintain muscle, body tissues & hair. Found in meat, fish, eggs, greek yogurt, seeds!

3. Fat – supports cell function, regulates hormones, helps absorb certain vitamins, supports brain function.  Enjoy nuts, avocado, olive oil, fatty fish like sardines!

4. Fiber – Not a macronutrient like our first three, but critical for digestion, satiety, managing blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Some favorite high-fiber foods include oats, beans, vegetables & quinoa.

5. Water – Essential for the function of our brain and all of our organs, so drink at least 8 glasses a day and feel great!

Ta-Da! Balance is attainable and I encourage you to take stock of how well you’re incorporating these simple, yet important, elements into your life.
Be well my friends and stay balanced this fall!
